Why Birds Migrate South
Why Birds Migrate South
The Amish arrived in Waldo County in the late-aughts. Most came for cheap, arable land. Levi and Hannah heard their plain folk were more tolerant than Smyrna’s; took it as a sign from God that Unity would be better for their daughter, Sarah. They told her it wasn’t the Anabaptist way to remain angry; prayed she’d forgive those high school football players, especially the one that tasted of liquor and cigarettes; who kept her soiled bonnet. But even Sarah knew that while fourteen wasn’t too young to be a mother, she’d no longer be suitable to take as a wife.
